SLEEP - A Case Study

Background

Mrs R presented to me as a 47 year old. At that time she was running her own small business, and a busy mother of 3 teenage children. She had always been fit and healthy, but had been plagued by fatigue and low energy really since the sleep-deprived years of small children. Since her children were small, Mrs R had really struggled to regain consistent, regenerative sleep and felt ongoing fatigue every, single day. 

 

Symptoms

Mrs R was aware that she was breathing through her mouth most of the time during both sedentary and active activities. She was definitely breathing heavily through her mouth at night, sometimes snoring, and woke with a dry mouth each morning. Most nights Mrs R went off to sleep well only to wake 3-4 hours later and then really struggled to get back to sleep. Mrs R was getting up to the loo at least once every night. It was very common for Mrs R to be so fatigued in the evening, she would fall asleep on the couch in front of the television. Mrs R reported persistent low energy and yawned a lot in the afternoon.

 

The BreatheWell Program

Mrs R was obviously looking for assistance with her quality of sleep. Her life involves lots of time in the car and we ensured that she used this time to work on her breathing, completing many of her sessions while she was in the car.  She was able to incorporate the practice into her daily routine easily and we adapted her program to fit in around her existing commitments. 

 

The Results - Mrs R's view

The changes in Mrs R’s life as she worked through The BreatheWell Program were significant. From the very first session, there was positive change and overall, her symptoms reduced by more than 90% by the time she completed the program.

The Results - my view

Confirming Mrs R’s report are my key measurements - When Mrs R commenced the program, she was taking 20 breaths every minute, she was breathing through her mouth 30% of the time. At the completion of the program, Mrs R was taking only 12 breaths / minute (the ideal human breathing rate), was breathing through her nose at all times, quietly and evenly even when she was exercising. 

Mrs R now felt she was achieving a fabulous night’s sleep, every single night. She was waking early, feeling refreshed, energised and clear headed. Mrs R no longer kept her husband awake with her snoring, nor did she spend hours every night going to the loo and then lying awake…. She felt she was able to deal with difficult situations better, with a clear head and less frustration.
