HayFever - Change your breathing, Change your life
Nov 23, 2021Is there a worse way to wake up than sneezing??
Repeatedly….. At 3am??
Is it really possible that pollen, or dust, or grass could possibly have entered your bedroom in the dead of night??
Hayfever has ways of dragging you down so that the dreaded months of spring arrive to suck the very life out of you. How is it that some people can recklessly enjoy a breezy, spring day standing in a garden of blossoms and grass without even a quiver in their airways or a twitch in their nose??
Why do some of us have to dry our sheets and towels indoors to avoid them absorbing whatever it is that sends our eyes streaming, our noses running like the Murumbidgee and our brain a foggy mush??
Double dosing on anti-histamine drugs and nasal sprays, or trading in your life and moving to the coast are not the only ways to tackle hayfever…..
Mouths are for eating, noses are for breathing
Humans were designed to breathe through our nose, except for when we are speaking. Our mouths do provide a great back up breathing function, but the best use of our mouth is for eating and speaking.
Our nose has loads of very cool features (27 in fact) that have a huge impact on our breathing - when we use our nose well, our breathing tends to be much more controlled, regular and rhythmical.
Most importantly for those of us prone to hayfever, our nose does an amazing job of filtering out micro-particles from the air we breathe to trap them before they get to our sensitive respiratory system.
Carbon dioxide - bad guy or good guy
One of the biggest myths related to the human body is the role of Carbon Dioxide….. Generally considered to be a total “bad boy” waste product, it is actually a critically important gas that our bodies need to keep our breathing running smoothly.
When we breathe well, we keep a higher level of Carbon Dioxide in our lungs and bodies - this actually works to relieve inflammation and irritation in our airways…. (The very thing that causes hayfever to really take hold is inflamed and irritated airways…..)
Too much of a good thing…
Could air be like all good things in life, and best in moderation? Could the amount of air you are breathing really be contributing to your hayfever?
Absolutely - like any of our body systems, your respiratory system (your airways and lungs) have a peak capacity. When your breathing is right - it feels so easy, so quiet, so gentle.
A long way from the wheezy, sneezing and gasping that hayfever brings with it. Hayfever is your body’s response to having to process too much air, without the air passing through your body’s best filtering system - your nose.
There was a time when I was unable to exercise outdoors for 3 months of the year, when I consumed packets and packets of anti-histamines, when I had to quickly attend to my most mentally taxing jobs in the morning before my hayfever turned my brain to fog for the afternoon…… then I changed my breathing, and changed my life.
Changing your breathing is a liberating journey that will free you from the relentless burden of hayfever and allow you to live your life to your full potential.
